Career Expo Day – Launceston
On 22 August 2024 National Joblink (NJL) hosted a Careers Expo Day in their Launceston Office. Over 100 participants attended to meet with 23 Employers and Community groups. They engaged in meaningful conversations around local services, employment and education opportunities. Transition to Work (TtW) and ParentsNext participants presented in right attire armed with resumes to meet with different industries to gain valuable insights. We were fortunate to have amazing support from McDonalds who supplied burgers and nuggets for lunch, The Rob Fairs Foundation and Mud Bar Restaurant who generously donated vouchers and gift cards for participants and stall holders to win. To encourage engagement every participant was provided with a card which needed a signature from each stall holder before they could enter a draw to win a prize.
Initially there was some anxiety from participants who have never interacted with employers’ face to face, but Mentors were available to support those first steps. Feedback from all stall holders was positive, they said that they were impressed with the participant engagement and the questions they were asking. The representative from Federal Group said it was the best expo they have ever attended and can’t wait for the next one.
TtW Mentor Matt and participant Jorja collaborated with Charly from Mud Bar Restaurant to create a choice of Mocktails. Jorja completed a Certificate in Hospitality and is currently working casually in the industry. Jorja was in her element, arriving early to help set up and took the lead in ensuring the stand was a success, resulting in a reference from Charly. All the stall holders were encouraging and positive about future opportunities for NJL’s participants. Statewide Independent Wholesalers, The Federal Group and McDonalds offered to host an Industry Tour. The McDonalds Recruitment Manager and Cotton On have asked for more resumes and Chemist Warehouse offered one participant a job on the spot. Telstra offered to interview one participant and Keen Partners telephoned to offer four participants interviews.
