Zen’s – Transition to Work success
Zen attended his first appointment at NJL with support from Catholic Care as he had recently moved into youth independent living and was not comfortable and felt anxious when meeting new people. Zen recently completed Grade 12 but felt directionless. The second appointment Zen attended by himself, and future goals were discussed. Zen explained he wanted to achieve his license. Zen attended NJL’s Driving School for lessons and began to attend other group activities like, Reclink, Games and Art. Zen’s confidence grew, and he started to ask to join more group activities and was attending the office multiple times a week.
Zen did not have a licence, and very little work experience other than farm work. He had no confidence that he would find suitable employment but with support a resume was created, and he started to apply for jobs. The National Joblink (NJL) environment offered Zen a place to relax, eat two minute noodles, participate in activities and meet other people. Zen secretly started to apply for jobs on his own and in mid-January he wanted to surprise staff with some great news “I have a job at KFC”! Excitement rippled through the office and Zen could not stop smiling, he said “I didn’t think I would ever get a job…this doesn’t even feel real”.
