Sophie’s Story

Sophie’s Story

23 September 2025

Sophie commenced into Transition to Work (TtW) in May this year. She arrived in Launceston homeless due to a family breakdown in Hobart and being 17 years old with minimal supports in place, this presented numerous barriers for Sophie to achieve her goals. Her TtW Mentors worked very closely with Sophie offering support and getting her to feel safe and supported in a time of uncertainty.

Sophie advised her mentor that she had enrolled into a Diploma of Nursing at TasTAFE with the goal to become a nurse. Sophie did request support from her mentors to commence this course, so that she would be able to stabilise herself and achieve her education goal.

Her TtW Mentors supported Sophie with obtaining a birth certificate and police check as well as purchasing scrubs for her course as this was all required. Her Mentor also assisted with gaining a placement in supported long term accommodation, Thyne House, a program that assists young people into an educational or employment pathway whilst providing stable accommodation and programs. Sophie was able to secure a placement at Thyne House while preparing and building a safe space for herself.

Sophie identified that without the support and continued motivation from TtW she would not have even potentially commenced the course. Sophie said, ‘Transition to Work has really helped me, without help from Taylor and the mentors I feel that my future would not look this bright, I even recommended Transition to Work to young people on social media that wanted support achieving their goals.’

With this continued support Sophie has also now secured employment at Cold Rock, continuing to stabilise herself and build her future. Sophie came to Launceston homeless with minimal support networks in place but with the support from TtW she has now stabilised her life and has some amazing plans in place with proactive action that builds her future.
