Skye’s Journey with National Joblink and Transition to Work

24 September 2025

Skye directly registered with National Joblink and Transition to Work (TtW) in August 2024 as a disengaged 15-year-old school leaver with a very high level of anxiety and a Year 8 level of education. Skye was originally unable to attend appointments without her mum being present and her TtW Mentor set to work on helping build Skye up for success.

The support originally started with Skye’s mentor working with her high school to obtain the required School Exemption so that she could be a part of TtW. Skye felt that school was not the place for her, she was not achieving any of her goals and it was exacerbating her anxiety. Once the School Exemption was acquired, her mentor supported Skye to create a plan for her future. Skye had ambitions to gain qualifications and employment in the Childcare industry but due to being 15 years old, there were a lot of limitations around this.

Skye’s TtW Mentor started off by assisting with getting a copy of her birth certificate and proof of age card. Enquiries were also made with a variety of education providers to find the best pathway into the childcare industry. Skye was very disappointed to find out that most education providers would not enrol her into a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care until she turned 18 – this wasn’t good enough for Skye or her mentor so further enquiries were made until a provider was found that would enrol her once she turned 16 – Asuria Training. Additional support was provided to help Skye increase her language, literacy and numeracy skills so that she would pass the required course entry test.

As soon as Skye turned 16, TtW supported her to complete her Plates Plus course, and she successfully obtained her Learner Drivers Permit. This was a big step to help Skye increase her independence and overall confidence which resulted in Skye beginning to attend her appointments without the support of her mother. Skye is now completing regular driving lessons and working her way towards her provisional drivers licence.

Now that Skye is 16, she was able to officially enrol into the Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care with Asuria Training. Having previously worked with her mentor to increase her language, literacy and numeracy, Skye passed the course entry test with flying colours and has now begun the course! TtW further supported Skye by helping with obtaining a Working with Vulnerable People card, which would also be a requirement for the course.

Skye has worked hard over the last 12 months and is now in a position to succeed with her goals. She is regularly attending driving lessons, actively participating and enjoying her course and has significantly improved her social anxiety and confidence. National Joblink and Transition to Work will continue to support Skye to achieve her goals and we all look forward to hearing about her future successes!
