Community connections – Warambu Community Hub

24 January 2024

Warambu Community Hub is connected to the Waraburra Primary State School which is located in Gracemere and is part of the National Community Hubs Program (NCHP). The NCHP was established in 2013 to engage newly arrived communities at risk of limited access to education, health and social services, and opportunities for economic independence. At its foundation, the NCHP model is a place-based and person-centred method of connecting newly arrived families with their community, schools and existing health, education, and settlement services. Each community hub enables and facilitates access to services that build social connections and social capital within newly arrived communities.

National Joblink approached Warambu Community Hub in July 2023 to provide in-kind support to assist parents wanting to build their future employability skills through ParentsNext, offering to deliver a 5-week block of NJL Wellness Workshops to all parents going through adversity with the cost of living and housing stress. The NJL workshops were designed for parents that are often time poor and have other barriers to employment or study such as low social skills, lack of access to transport and lack of confidence. NJL Workshops provided support for parents to attend small group playgroup activities, spending quality time with their children, socialize with other parents, receive advice and support to overcoming barriers and feel a sense of belonging within the community.

NJL mentors and ParentsNext has been well received in the community, so much so that some of local parents have shown interest in signing up to the NJL ParentsNext to gain ongoing mentoring support to reach their future study and employment goals. National Joblink also attended the Gracemere Community Fair hosted by Warambu Community Hub and Waraburra Primary School where NJL provided vital information on support services in the community, further discussed the benefits of ParentsNext and provided fun and engaging activities for children. NJL and Warambu Community Hub have already started planning for more NJL Workshops to be delivered at Warambu Community Hub, further strengthening our partnership into 2024.
